Wildfires Rapidly Intensify Across Georgia and Florida, Leaving Homes Destroyed
Wildfires intensified across the southeastern US on Wednesday, spreading rapidly through parts of southeast Georgia and northeast Florida.
In Georgia, at least 50 homes have been destroyed as fires spread amid dry, windy conditions. Meanwhile, communities in northeast Florida faced evacuations and temporary school closures as flames moved closer to residential areas.
Several of the largest fires were around Jacksonville and along Georgia’s coastal regions. Prolonged drought, low humidity, and strong winds have fueled the rapid growth of these fires.
In Florida, firefighting crews responded to more than 130 active wildfires, which have collectively burned around 39 square miles (about 100–101 square kilometers), primarily in the northern part of the state. Georgia has also seen significant fire activity. The two largest wildfires in the state have burned over 30 square miles together, with several additional smaller fires reported.
One of the most concerning incidents is in Brantley County, where a fast-moving wildfire has already destroyed dozens of homes and is threatening up to around 1,000 properties. The fire expanded rapidly, growing several times its size within a short period on Tuesday.
Evacuation orders have been extended in Brantley County, adding to the roughly 800 residents who had already been asked to leave earlier. A separate wildfire in nearby Clinch County has also led to additional evacuations.
