Powerful 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Warnings in Japan

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Japan’s northeastern coast on Monday afternoon, triggering tsunami warnings for 3m (10ft) waves. Japanese authorities warned that another major tremor could strike within the coming week.

The quake hit off the Sanriku coast on Monday at around 4:53 p.m. local time at a depth of roughly 19 kilometers (about 11 miles). The Japan Meteorological Agency put the magnitude at 7.7, while the U.S. Geological Survey recorded it slightly lower at 7.4. Apart from these, there have been several smaller ones, the latest at a magnitude of 5.4. Earlier, it reported one at 4.5 and another at 4.9.

A tsunami of about 80 centimeters (2.6 feet) was detected at the Kuji port, and a smaller tsunami of 40 centimeters (1.3 feet) was recorded at another port, both in Iwate prefecture, before Japan lifted all tsunami alerts and advisories.

More than 170,000 residents were told to move to higher ground. Disruption on land stayed limited but noticeable. Several bullet train services were halted, and around 100 homes lost power during the event.
