Powerful Nor’easter Slams Northeast, Triggers Blizzard Warnings and Travel Bans
A powerful nor’easter is sweeping across the Northeast from Sunday into Monday. At least a foot of snow or more is blanketing the region, prompting the first blizzard warning for New York City in nearly a decade, causing power outages and a travel ban in New York City.
In total, nearly 40 million Americans are under blizzard warnings, while another 14 million face winter storm alerts. Several states including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, and Rhode Island have declared states of emergency.
The system has intensified rapidly off the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina, producing heavy snow and gusty winds stretching from Virginia Beach through Philadelphia and New York City to Newport, Rhode Island. On Sunday night, more than 20,000 customers in New Jersey and over 12,000 in Virginia were without electricity as conditions deteriorated.
Conditions are expected to be harshest along the coast, with New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island forecasted to be hit the worst.
