Western U.S. Braces for Severe Winter Storm with Heavy Snowfall and Flood Risks
A series of powerful Pacific storm systems is impacting the western United States with multiple days of heavy precipitation, according to the National Weather Service. Reports suggest widespread rain, gusty winds, and significant mountain snowfall through Wednesday, Feb. 18. California is experiencing the most severe conditions, with winter storm warnings, coastal flood advisories, and wind alerts in effect. Sierra Nevada may receive 4 to 8 feet of snow. Major Sierra passes including Interstate 80 at Donner Pass is expected to close intermittently. Flash flood warnings have been issued for Los Angeles County due to heavy rain, thunderstorms, and tornado potential, prompting evacuation warnings for recent burn‑scar areas.
NWS Coastal flood advisories also remain active around San Francisco and Monterey Bay, with 1-1.5 feet of possible shoreline inundation. The event is ongoing with rapidly changing conditions.
