Typhoon Ragasa Strikes South China Coast After Deadly Impact in Taiwan & Hong Kong

Typhoon Ragasa made landfall on Wednesday along China’s southern coast after leaving a trail of destruction across Taiwan and battering Hong Kong with fierce winds and torrential rain. The storm came ashore on Hailing Island in Yangjiang City, Guangdong Province, according to Chinese state media, marking its second major landfall after first striking the Philippines on Monday.

Authorities in Zhuhai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou were bracing for coastal flooding and seawater intrusion as Ragasa pushed inland. In Taiwan, Typhoon Ragasa unleashed more than a foot of rain, submerging entire neighborhoods in Hualien County as days of relentless downpours triggered catastrophic flooding and landslides. Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, massive waves battered the shoreline, swamping roads and flooding homes across the city’s eastern and southern districts.

Sep 22 | Super Typhoon Ragasa Slams Into Philippines, Taiwan and Hong Kong

Super Typhoon Ragasa, locally known as Typhoon Nando has erupted as one of the most powerful storms this year, made its first landfall on September 22, 2025 across the northern Philippines, Taiwan, and parts of southern China.

With sustained winds reaching 215 km/h and gusts up to 265 km/h, the Philippines’ weather agency warned of coastal inundation, saying “there is a high risk of life-threatening storm surge with peak heights exceeding 3 meters (nearly 10 feet) within the next 24 hours over the low-lying or exposed coastal localities” of the northern provinces of Cagayan, Batanes, Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur. More than 8,200 people evacuated to safety in Cagayan while 1,220 fled to emergency shelters in Apayao, which is prone to flash floods and landslides. China has begun preparing to evacuate 400,000 people from the city of Shenzhen.

The storm is forecast to move west, passing near or over the Babuyan Islands before heading toward the South China Sea, possibly impacting Guangdong province.
