Severe Windstorm Threat Looms Over Northern Plains and Upper Midwest in the US

A damaging and long-lasting, fast-moving windstorm began forming Monday across parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, with damaging wind gusts over 75 mph expected to continue into Tuesday morning. 

The SPC placed parts of South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa under a Level 4 out of 5 risk for severe thunderstorms. The elevated alert stems from the potential for destructive straight-line winds, with some gusts possibly reaching up to 90 mph. These regions may also experience damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. 

Adding to the hazards, saturated grounds from recent rainfall have increased the likelihood of flash flooding, especially in low-lying and urban areas throughout the northern Plains.
