Oregon’s Cram Fire Nears Megafire Status as Fire Scorches Over 95,000 Acres

The Cram Fire, burning northwest of Madras in Jefferson and Wasco counties, is currently the largest active wildfire in the US, according to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). Since igniting on July 13 near the sparsely populated community of Willowdale, roughly 130 miles southeast of Portland, the blaze has scorched approximately 95,736 acres.

While containment has reached 73%, 887 firefighting personnel remain on site. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. If the fire surpasses 100,000 acres, it will be classified as a megafire. According to the NIFC, six major wildfires are currently burning across Oregon, with total acreage exceeding 102,000.

The wildfire tore through grasslands and rangeland, destroying at least four homes and 14 outbuildings, including barns, sheds, and workshops. At its most intense, the fire put over 650 structures at risk, forcing about 90 homes into Level-3 “Go Now” evacuation status. Smoke from the fire has also impacted air quality in the surrounding areas.

Here’s the latest update on the fires:

Cram Wildfire: 95,736 acres burned, 73% contained.

Board Shanty Wildfire: 474 acres burned, 20% contained.

Hagelstein Wildfire: 672 acres burned, 62% contained.

Elk Wildfire: 2,640 acres burned, 90% contained.
