Torrential Rains Trigger Flash Flooding Across Northeast US, with New York & New Jersey Among the Worst Hit

New York is now in cleanup mode following Monday night’s intense downpour that unleashed flash floods and widespread damage. In New York City, rainfall totals hit a daily record of 2.64 inches with a staggering 2.07 inches falling within just one hour. That downpour overwhelmed the city’s stormwater drainage system, which is designed to handle up to 1.75 inches per hour, resulting in subway flooding. 

In New Jersey, relentless downpours on Monday claimed two lives, swamped streets, shut down subways, and left drivers stranded. While most flash flood watches and warnings in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania expired by Tuesday morning, several roads and streets remained waterlogged. There is a possibility that the flood risk across the mid-Atlantic will remain as more rounds of rain and thunderstorms expected through the weekend.
