Cat 3 Hurricane Erick Made a Landfall in Mexico’s Western State of Oaxaca

Hurricane Erick intensified into a powerful Category 3 storm before slamming into Mexico’s western state of Oaxaca on Thursday. According to the National Hurricane Center (NOAA), Erick made landfall approximately 20 miles east of Punta Maldonado.

At its peak, the hurricane packed maximum sustained winds of 125 mph (205 kph) and was moving northwest at around 9 mph (15 kph), shortly after being downgraded slightly from a Category 4 storm.

Forecasters warned that Erick is expected to bring 6 to 8 inches of rain across southeastern Guerrero and the coastal regions of Oaxaca through Friday.
