Massive Flooding Submerges Outback Queensland, Leaving Widespread Devastation
Queensland, Australia, is grappling with severe flooding that has devastated vast regions, particularly in the state’s outback. The inundation had affected an area exceeding one million square kilometers, larger than France and Germany combined, making it one of the most extensive flood events in the nation’s history.
The remote town of Birdsville is among the worst-affected regions, experiencing its most severe flooding in decades. Torrents of water have surged across southwest Queensland, following the path of the Diamantina River toward Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre.
According to Weatherzone, the Diamantina River at Birdsville surged by four meters in just 24 hours. The disaster has also taken a heavy toll on the region’s agriculture, with over 140,000 livestock reportedly killed or lost in the floodwaters.
