Powerful 7.7-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Myanmar, Tremors Felt Across Thailand and China

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, causing tremors that were felt across parts of Southeast Asia, including Thailand and China. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit around 12:50 p.m. local time near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. It was followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock 11 minutes later.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of Sagaing and at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, making it strong enough to cause notable surface shaking. The tremor was strong enough to slosh water out of rooftop pools and cause visible structural damage in affected areas.

Strong tremors were reported in neighboring Thailand, where buildings swayed, and minor structural damage occurred. Meanwhile, in Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw, roads cracked, and infrastructure sustained visible damage.
