Wildfires Continue to Ravage the Carolinas, Threatening Communities
Wildfires continue to burn in the Carolinas, prompting evacuations. Gusty winds, dry air, and high temperatures fueled the blazes.
Officials listed more than 200 wildfires in North Carolina early Monday, covering almost 2,100 acres of land, according to the North Carolina Forest Service. The Melrose fire, the largest in North Carolina, had burned over 500+ acres and was 63% contained as of Monday, according to Polk County Emergency Management.
The South Carolina Forestry Commission registered another 112 wildfires on Monday. South Carolina’s largest fire had already burned 1,600 acres near Myrtle Beach, and as of Monday, it was contained 30%. Another fire in Horry County that burned about 800 acres was 80% contained as of Sunday afternoon, the Forestry Commission said on social media.

Strong winds and dry conditions fueled 175 wildfires across North and South Carolina, prompting evacuations on Saturday. By Sunday, the fires had scorched a total of 4,200 acres across the region.
A wildfire in Polk County, North Carolina, has scorched between 400 and 500 acres and had 0 % containment as of Sunday, according to Jeremy Waldrop of the North Carolina Fire Service. According to news sources, this fire has been given the name Melrose Fire. Another wildfire, known as the Falls Dam Fire, has burned around 300 acres in Uwharrie National Forest, Montgomery County, according to the United States Forest Service.
A wildfire in Carolina Forest, South Carolina, scorched at least 1,600 acres, forcing Horry County Fire Rescue to evacuate multiple neighborhoods. By Sunday afternoon, firefighters had contained 30% of the blaze.
