The bushfire raging through Grampians National Park has expanded significantly, growing from 500 hectares to 5,000 hectares in just one day. Authorities warn nearby communities to remain on high alert as hot and dry weather conditions persist, further fueling the blaze.

Residents in areas to the east and south of the fire—such as Mafeking, Dunkeld, Bornes Hill, Willaura, and Moyston—are under an advice warning. Officials are urging locals to stay updated and prepared, particularly given the risk that the fire could break containment lines and spread beyond the Grampians.

On Thursday morning, Vic Emergency downgraded the emergency warning for regions including the Grampians, Mirranatwa, Victoria Valley, and Jimmy Creek to a “Watch and Act” alert. Residents in these areas are advised to have an evacuation plan ready as the fire continues to move northward toward Jimmy Creek and eastward and southward toward Bornes Hill and Yarram Gap Road.

Efforts to control the fire are ongoing, with over 200 Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Forest Fire Management Victoria firefighters working tirelessly alongside 13 bombers, nine helicopters, and several observers. Support vehicles, including tankers shuttling water from Avalon and heavy machinery such as dozers and graders, are also being deployed to tackle the inferno. Hot and dry conditions are expected to persist into Saturday, heightening concerns about the fire’s potential to intensify.
