A powerful winter storm is battering the Great Lakes region, delivering over five feet of snow in some areas and creating treacherous icy conditions that led to a multi-vehicle collision on a Michigan interstate. The National Weather Service has issued multiple winter weather alerts for the Great Lakes snow belts, warning of ongoing snowfall and a new round of wintry weather expected between Wednesday and Thursday.

The current conditions are the season’s first significant outbreak of lake-effect snow, which has already blanketed parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. Areas downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario were particularly hard hit. Northeastern Ohio, western New York, and regions of upstate New York experienced heavy snowfall. While downtown Buffalo, New York, saw little to no snow accumulation, communities just a few miles south were buried under several feet, with residents using yardsticks to measure the snowfall.

Snowfall will ease across the Great Lakes by Tuesday evening, offering temporary relief for the hardest-hit areas. However, conditions might get worse again as a powerful cold front from Canada will sweep into the region on Wednesday, triggering widespread snowfall through Thursday. This cold blast will bring freezing temperatures to nearly 70% of the United States—impacting roughly 220 million people—by the upcoming weekend.
