Severe Flash Flooding Due to Historic Rainfall in Roswell, New Mexico, Causes Widespread Damage

Severe flash flooding in New Mexico over the weekend claimed the lives of two individuals after torrential overnight rain triggered widespread flooding. The extreme downpour left motorists stranded and swept away several vehicles. The thunderstorms, which battered the region from Saturday into early Sunday, moved east-northeast, bringing not only heavy rain but also the threat of large hail and destructive winds.

New Mexico National Guard troops, rescued dozens of people trapped by the rising waters. The National Weather Service (NWS) declared an overnight flash flood emergency for Roswell and surrounding areas, while Chaves County emergency management reported multiple water rescues.

The NWS office in Albuquerque confirmed that Roswell received 5.78 inches of rainfall on Saturday, breaking the previous daily record of 5.65 inches, set on November 1, 1901, for the southeastern New Mexico city. The rain brought heavy damage to homes and businesses overnight, with many reporting floodwaters entering buildings.
