“Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight” Brings Torrential Rain and Severe Flooding to North Carolina
Heavy rainfall of more than one foot drenched the southeastern coast of North Carolina on Monday as an unnamed storm moved ashore, targeting the mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. The National Hurricane Center has labeled this system as Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight.
Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight will bring gusty winds, intense rainfall, flash flooding, coastal flooding, and dangerous beach conditions to parts of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast over the next few days.
NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center has warned of potential flooding across northern South Carolina, much of North Carolina, and southern Virginia through Monday night. The greatest risk is around Wilmington, North Carolina.
Carolina Beach declared a state of emergency on Monday after receiving a historic 18 inches of rain in just 12 hours—a once-in-1,000-year rainfall event, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. Other parts of the region also reported more than a foot of rain in 12 hours, a once-in-200-year event.
Flooding worsened in nearby Brunswick County, where rainfall rates reached 4 to 5 inches per hour on Monday. Multiple roads were washed out due to the downpour. Sunny Point received more than a month’s worth of rain when over 9 inches fell in just three hours.
