Typhoon Yagi Intensifies into a Category 4 Storm as It Approaches China’s Hainan Island

Typhoon Yagi has rapidly intensified into a super typhoon as it moves toward China’s popular holiday destination, Hainan Island, where it is expected to make landfall later this week. Yagi, now packing maximum sustained winds of 240 kph (150 mph) near its center, strengthened into a super typhoon on Wednesday night. Local authorities have elevated the typhoon alert to the highest level, Level 1, in preparation for its arrival.

The storm is likely to bring torrential rainfall to southern coastal regions, including Guangdong and Hainan Island. Yagi is expected to intensify further and make landfall between Qionghai in Hainan and Dianbai in Guangdong, from the afternoon to late evening on September 6. It is currently ranked as the second-most powerful tropical cyclone globally in 2024, following the Category 5 Atlantic earlier in the summer.

Originating as a tropical cyclone in the Philippine Sea on Sunday, Yagi brought about 10 inches of rainfall to the Philippines this week. The heavy downpours resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, displaced tens of thousands, and damaged hundreds of homes, according to reports from the Philippine government.

The China Meteorological Administration has issued warnings of potential flooding and storm surges in the affected areas and has raised the emergency response to the second-highest level. In Guangdong Province, the highest-level emergency warning has been declared in anticipation of Yagi’s impact.

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, once Typhoon Yagi moves past southern China, it is expected to weaken as it heads toward northern Vietnam.
