Deadly Athens Wildfire Rages, Destroying Communities and Forcing Evacuations

A massive wildfire swept through the northern suburbs of Athens on Monday, claiming at least one life and prompting widespread evacuations. The fire, fueled by strong winds, posed significant challenges for the hundreds of firefighters and numerous water-dropping aircraft deployed to control it.

The blaze, which began on Sunday near Lake Marathon, approximately 35 kilometers (22 miles) northeast of Athens, rapidly spread across Mount Pendeli and into the northern suburbs of the capital. The fire ravaged multiple homes and businesses, both in the suburban areas and communities close to the lake.

Central Athens was enveloped in a thick cloud of smoke and ash, while power outages affected parts of the city, disrupting traffic signals at key intersections. Nearby towns such as Varnavas and northeastern areas of Athens also fell victim to the flames, with some fires reaching heights of up to 25 meters (80 feet), including a school in Nea Penteli.

Authorities reported that at least 18 people suffered injuries, primarily from smoke inhalation, as the fire crept on the outskirts of a suburb. Satellite imagery from Greece’s National Observatory indicated that the fire had scorched approximately 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres) by late Monday.

The National Observatory of Athens, located in Penteli, is threatened as the flames approach some of its facilities. Of particular concern is a fire that has engulfed a timber factory, raising alarms due to the hazardous materials in the vicinity, including an abandoned petrol station nearby. In other parts of Penteli, explosions—likely from fuel tanks and residential gas cylinders—have been reported, further complicating the firefighting efforts.
