Taiwan Braces for Typhoon Gaemi – First Typhoon of the Season | July 23, 2024

Taiwan is preparing for Typhoon Gaemi, the first typhoon of the season to impact the island. According to the Central Weather Administration (CWA), Gaemi is anticipated to make landfall on the northeast coast between the night of July 24 and the early hours of July 25.

Currently classified as a medium-strength typhoon, Gaemi is forecasted to cross the Taiwan Strait and reach the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian in the early hours of July 26. The CWA reports that Gaemi is carrying sustained winds of 144 kph, with gusts reaching up to 180 kph.

Significant rainfall is expected, with some mountainous counties in central and southern Taiwan projected to receive up to 1,800mm of rain. In response to the approaching storm, cities across Taiwan may declare a typhoon holiday, leading to the closure of financial markets, schools, and offices.
