Ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily Brings Torrential Rains and Flash Flood Risks in Sydney

New South Wales, particularly Sydney, has been experiencing torrential rain since early this week, leading to three rescues from floodwaters as ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily moves across the state. Warragamba Dam is nearing full capacity at 97% but WaterNSW says the dam will not spill because of the dry recent conditions due to heat.

After impacting Queensland, ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily is crossing into western NSW, bringing heavy rain and flash flooding to inland communities before hitting Sydney with 21mm of rain and causing localized flash flooding. Rural communities will record significant rainfall, with Fort Grey near the border receiving 100mm, Tibooburra 79mm, and White Cliffs more than 85mm.

The State Emergency Service (SES) conducted three rescues in Albion Park and Campbelltown. The SES emphasized the sudden nature of flash flooding and urged caution when encountering flooded roads.

Despite the heavy downpour, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) expects a southerly wind to bring a drop in humidity and temperatures throughout the week, making conditions less muggy.
