On Friday, New York City experienced an unprecedented deluge of rain that overwhelmed its sewer system, causing floodwaters to surge through streets, basements, schools, subways, and vehicles in the nation’s most populous city.
New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport received nearly 8 inches of rain in a single day, the highest since 1948. In Brooklyn, a month’s worth of rain fell in just three hours, with some of the heaviest rainfall occurring on Friday morning.

The flooding also affected 150 out of the city’s 1,400 schools, which, despite the challenges, remained open on Friday, as confirmed by New York City school chancellor David Banks during a news briefing.
