From Super Typhoon to Tropical Storm, Typhoon Saola’s Path of Destruction: Assess the Impact
On September 2, 2023, after battering Hong Kong and Macau, Typhoon Saola made landfall in southern China. The storm left a trail of damage along the coast, including in the Asian financial hub of Hong Kong and the nearby gambling enclave of Macau. Railway operations and flights were suspended in some areas, but most services have now resumed. Nearly 900,000 people were moved to safety before the typhoon hit, and most of them have returned home.
The typhoon weakened from a super typhoon to a typhoon before making landfall and then weakened further to become a tropical storm. The storm is moving away from China. It is expected to bring damaging winds, heavy rains, flooding, mudslides, and travel disruption to southern and eastern China through Monday.

9:00 AM ET, September 1, 2023 | Typhoon Saola: China Braces as Storm Nears Hong Kong and Guangdong
China is on high alert as Typhoon Saola advances towards its southeastern coastline, with Hong Kong and Guangdong province at the forefront of the storm’s path. Currently, Typhoon Saola is, situated about 295 kilometers to the southeast of Guangdong.
As the storm approaches, Chinese meteorologists have issued a red warning, which is the most severe typhoon threat level. Torrential rains and strong winds have already caused flooding and displacement in the northern part of the Philippines. So far, there have been no reported casualties.
As Saola approaches China, it is expected to make landfall between Huilai County in Guangdong and Hong Kong, potentially bringing heavy rainfall and storm surges to coastal areas. Shanghai has cancelled trains going to Guangdong and China Railway has suspended many important services.
