Northern Italy’s Emilia-Romagna Region Devastated by Heavy Storms and Flooding: Actionable Insights on EigenPrism
A series of intense storms have brought havoc and devastation to the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. Towns in the area have been submerged as a result of catastrophic flooding and landslides. The situation has been particularly dire in Emilia-Romagna and parts of the central Marche region, where 21 rivers burst their banks, causing widespread damage.
As a consequence of the extreme weather,, a bridge connecting Motta-Budrio and San Martino in the Bologna area collapsed. In the region of Ravenna, 5,000 residents had to be evacuated from their homes. Landslides have also cut off mountain villages on the Romagna side of the Mugello valley.
Ispra, the environmental agency of the Italian government, stated in a report from 2021 that 7,423 communities (over 90% of the total) in the entire nation were at risk of landslides, floods, and coastline erosion.
The road to recovery and rebuilding will be long and challenging for northern Italy in the aftermath of this devastating natural disaster.
