A powerful cyclone which intensified into a category-five storm has made landfall in the coastlines of Bangladesh and
Myanmar today. The cyclone is bringing heavy rain and winds of up to 195kph (120mph), which may cause dangerous flooding
on land around the Bay of Bengal.

Storm surges of up to four meters could inundate villages in low-lying areas, including Cox’s Bazar, the world’s largest
refugee camp, where nearly one million people reside. Around 500,000 people have been evacuated to safer areas, and
forecasters warned that Cyclone Mocha could be the most powerful storm seen in Bangladesh in nearly two decades.

Reports suggest that the storm has caused major disruption near the city of Sittwe in Myanmar whereas in Bangladesh,
strong winds and heavy rain have also started to batter the region. According to the Bangladeshi meteorological
department office, the maximum sustained wind speed within around 75km (45 miles) of the center of the cyclone was
around 195 kilometers (120 miles) per hour with gusts and squalls of 215 kilometers per hour.

The anticipated heavy rain from Cyclone Mocha is likely to result in a downpour that could trigger landslides, a grave
threat to those residing in hillside camps where landslips occur frequently.
