Powerful Earthquakes in Turkey: Get Actionable Insights on Significant Destruction

On Monday, a Magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred near the Turkish-Syrian border. The epicenter of the earthquake was close to the Turkish city of Antakya. Tremors were also felt in Syria, Egypt, and Lebanon. The quake is said to be an aftershock following the devastating earthquake of February 6th . This new quake led to a Magnitude 5.8 aftershock three minutes later.  In addition, 31 weaker aftershocks were reported. 

These new earthquakes in Turkey have struck the region while it is still reeling from the  Magnitude 7.8 quake. Two weeks ago,this quake claimed more than 47,000 lives, destroyed hundreds of thousands of buildings, and caused at least $20 billion in economic damage.  

Buildings in Turkey and Syria, that were weakened by the February 6th tremors, have also toppled. As of today, at least 6 more people are confirmed dead.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook Turkey and Syria on Monday morning, sending tremors as far away as Lebanon and Israel. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at a depth of 14.9 miles, 14.2 miles east of Nurdagi, in Turkey’s Gaziantep region.  

Less than seven hours later,  Turkey experienced another powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5. The epicenter was about 40 miles north northeast of Kahramanmaras, at a depth of 1.3 miles. 

While the impact of the second quake is still being assessed, the first tremor razed at least 345,000 properties in Turkey alone. The combined death toll is over 44,000 as of now. Affected cities are Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Hatay, Osmaniye, Adiyaman, Malatya, Sanliurfa, Adana, Diyarbakir, and Kilis. According to Reuters, 16 buildings in Sanliurfa, and 34 in Osmaniye were pulverized. 

In northern Syria, the quake flattened a number of buildings in the city of Hama. In the city of Salqin, dozens of structures have been damaged. At least 17 structures collapsed in Diyarbakir, including a shopping mall.
