Ice Storm Hits Texas: Assess the Impact as the Storm Move Towards Northeast

Ice and sleet continue to batter parts of the southern and central US as the deadly ice storm continues to leave its mark. The freezing rain, sleet, and extremely cold air will continue into midweek. On Thursday, fresh freezing rain fell as a result of the devastating ice storm. The storm is now threatening the Northeast US with a blast of dangerously cold winds this weekend.

In addition to the hazardous road conditions, more than 400,000 homes, and businesses were without power. In the bitter cold on Thursday, 60,000 customers in Arkansas, 17,000 in Mississippi, and 9,000 in Tennessee reported power outages. The Parkland Health System in Dallas remained closed due to the storm. It also led to the cancelation of 2400 flights.

But on Thursday afternoon, ice-covered areas of Texas finally saw temperatures rise. Wind chill warnings are in effect for more than 15 million people, starting Friday. All of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut are included in the alerts. Alerts also cover a large portion of New York state, Long Island, Northeast Pennsylvania, and Northern New Jersey.

February 1, 2023 | Deadly Ice Storm hits Texas, Worse Snow Accumulations Expected on Wednesday

On Tuesday, a massive ice storm hit Texas, crippling travel and causing power outages. The storm is expected to persist throughout Wednesday. Parts of Texas, Arkansas, and Tennessee are anticipated to experience a nasty mix of freezing rain, sleet, and the build-up of ice. 

The catastrophic storm has resulted in 1600 road closures, and hundreds of flights have been canceled. Schools have also been forced to close in western Tennessee and northwest Mississippi. 

Ice storm warnings are in effect for central and eastern Arkansas, western Tennessee, northwestern Mississippi, and parts of Texas. The worst ice accumulations are expected in the region around Austin and San Antonio, as well as parts of Dallas-Fort Worth. 

From West Texas to western Tennessee, widespread ice accumulation of at least a quarter of an inch is anticipated through Thursday morning. On Wednesday, more than half an inch of freezing rain is anticipated in the alert zones.
