Iowa Tornados: Deadly Tornados Near Des Moines Cause Massive Destruction

According to the news by CNN, a series of tornados ripped through many counties near Des Moines, in Iowa, on Saturday. The tornados caused massive damage to several homes, buildings, and caused power outages. 

As per the NWS Storm Prediction Center, at least three thunderstorms produced tornados. Furthermore, there were more than 30 reports of tornados across central and southern Iowa on Saturday. As per the preliminary report, the tornado in Madison County was at least an EF3, with wind speeds of 136 miles per hour.

Similarly, NWS reported the Winterset tornado was one of at least 2 EF3 tornados to hit Iowa on Saturday. Another EF3 with winds around 138 mph was responsible for damage near Chariton. As per the NWS reports, the Chariton tornado was on ground for 16 and a half miles. Additionally, an EF2 was seen near Leon, EF1 in Vinton and an EF0 near West Lake Park. 

A tornado watch is now in effect for southeast Oklahoma, western and northern Arkansas and southern Missouri. The NWS predicts that tornados, few intense, are likely along with storms containing hail and damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph is likely.

As per the NWS reports, over the years, the severe thunderstorm season in March is likely to be more focused over the Gulf Coast states, including Florida and Texas. Typically in March, Texas averages 11 tornados, while Iowa only sees two.
