Landslides and Intense Flooding in Brazil Cause Major Damage to Property
According to the news by CNN, torrential rains sparked intense flooding in Sao Paulo, Brazil since Friday. The flooding led to landslides that caused damage to infrastructure and lives.
There were reports of bridges and houses collapsing and buildings partially submerged by floodwaters. According to the authorities at municipality of Franco da Rocha, the state witnessed flooding in houses that left vehicles submerged in muddy waters, with some houses reduced to rubble.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change, the southern part of Brazil is experiencing an increase in average rainfall and extreme rain events since the 1960s – due to increase in global greenhouse gas emissions and the depletion of ozone layer. The frequency, as well as the intensity, will continue to increase as the Earth warms.
