Colorado Wildfire Burns in Big Sur, Shuts Down California’s Highway 1
According to the news by CNN, a rare winter wildfire namely, the Colorado Fire, started near the coast in Big Sur, spreading across 1500 acres on January 22. The wildfire started on Friday night in the Palo Colorado Canyon and Rocky Creek Road area in Monterey County. The Cal Fire officials assessed that the fire spread violently mainly due to gusty winds that blew the flames in unpredictable directions and prompted a large number of evacuations.
On Saturday morning, nearly 30, 000 residents were without power in Oakland Hills. Parts of California’s Highway 1 was shut down in both directions. As per the National Weather Service, the fire had reached only 5% containment on Saturday morning. However, conditions improved as the winds died down and humidity went up.
Winter wildfires are rare in California. Since 2013, there has only been 20 fires that broke out during January.
