Landslides and Intense Flooding in India and Nepal Cause Massive Damage to Property

Record-breaking rains sparked intense flash flooding in India and Nepal. There were reports of bridges and houses collapsing and infrastructure partially submerged by floodwaters. The flooding led to landslides that caused massive damage to infrastructure and lives.

In Nepal, the flooding mainly took place in regions across Western Nepal where affected areas saw many landslides, damage to infrastructure and property and many fatalities. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, affected areas near Nainital, in Uttarakhand, recorded 13.4 inches of rainfall and in some areas 15.8 inches – marking the highest rainfall over a 24-hour period ever recorded in the region.

Similarly, torrential rains battered the coastal state of Kerala since Friday. The state witnessed  flooding in houses that left vehicles submerged in muddy waters, with some houses reduced to rubble.

As per Indian Meteorological Department, the rainfall and flooding in India is due to the monsoon as well as a low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea. Forecasters predict that heavy rainfall and risk of flooding will continue through the week.
