7.3-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Alaska, Triggers Tsunami Alerts Later Lifted
A strong 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off Alaska’s coast on Wednesday, triggering a tsunami warning for parts of the state, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake struck at 12:38 p.m. local time (4:38 p.m. ET), and its epicenter was 55 miles south of Sand Point, a community on Popof Island.
NOAA initially issued a tsunami warning in the state’s southern coast, which it later cancelled and downgraded to an advisory. A tsunami wave measuring 0.2 ft was observed at Sand Point, Alaska. Shaking was reported in Anchorage, but the city was not at risk from the tsunami.
