6.2-Magnitude Earthquake hits Istanbul, Triggers Widespread Panic

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake shook Istanbul and other areas of Turkey on April 23, 2025, triggering widespread panic. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) and had its epicenter located approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of Istanbul.

At least 236 people were treated for injuries they suffered while trying to jump from buildings or for panic attacks. The earthquake lasted 13 seconds and was followed by more than 50 aftershocks, the strongest measuring 5.9 magnitude.

The quake’s impact was felt well beyond Istanbul, shaking neighboring provinces including Tekirdag, Yalova, Bursa, and Balikesir, and even reaching the coastal city of Izmir, situated roughly 550 kilometers (340 miles) to the south.
